Its predecessor, pSivida Limited, was originally registered as an Australian company in Western Australia in December 2000. pSivida specialized in developing tiny, sustained-release drug delivery systems designed to provide controlled and steady medication release over months or even years. The company focused on leveraging its core technology platforms, Durasert and BioSilicon, to treat chronic diseases affecting the back of the eye. Currently, pSivida has three approved products and two major candidates in development, representing successive generations of the Durasert technology platform. Notably, three-quarters of the sustained-release devices developed by pSivida target retinal diseases and have received regulatory approval in either the United States or the European Union.
